Aznar was one of the few Spanish soldiers who had empathy and understanding for the Netherlands’ rebellion against Spain, although he never dared to say so openly for fear of becoming himself the victim of a persecution similar to the one his moorish ancestors had to suffer just a century ago. Only their expulsion by the catholic Spaniards into the far West of Andalusia had finally brought them some peace. But as Aznar was growing up in the small village of Busquistar in the Alpujarras mountains, only the very old ones would still speak of that time.
Still, the memory was kept alive and when Philipp his king ordered Aznar to go North and kill, his grandfather took off the ring he himself had received from his grandfather and handed it over to Aznar upon his departure. To his family that ring was a momentum of the dismal times of persecution, and it was choosen as a talisman for Aznar not only to protect him, but to transform that momentum into a reminder, appealing to Aznar not to forget about his humanity while fighting. Aznar lost his life in one of the many battles. His ring shows up in the Zwin now and then, but before someone can pick it up, it always slips away and disappears again.
